Top HP DIRECT Questions
Top HP DIRECT Questions
For the U.S. Only
Contact: HP DIRECT Field Question and Comment Line, 408 or Telnet 345-
8678
The following are answers to the most commonly asked questions on the HP
DIRECT Field Question and Comment Line.
Customer Benefits and Services
Why should customers call HP DIRECT?
HP DIRECT offers customers fast, easy access to HP. Customers can call
HP DIRECT from 6 am to 5 pm Pacific time, Monday-Friday, for product
information, including pricing, availability, features, and benefits;
for presales technical support; and to order or check order status.
Customers who order from HP DIRECT receive purchase agreement discounts.
For which products can customers call HP DIRECT?
HP DIRECT provides presales information and places orders for a variety
of Computer Systems Organization (CSO) hardware, software, and supplies.
Available products, as shown in the HP DIRECT System and Workstation
Products catalog, P/N 5091-6328EUS, include terminals; mass storage,
memory, and simple software products; DTCs; system printers; field and
board upgrades; and certain supplies and accessories.
Do customers get their discounts if they order from HP DIRECT?
HP DIRECT honors all regular PATSY discounts, including state and local
government discounts. Because of the special processes required HP
DIRECT cannot place orders with GSA, demo development, and some
educational discounts. HP DIRECT reps will look up customer discount
numbers as needed.
Does HP DIRECT offer faster product delivery than local sales offices?
HP DIRECT currently uses the same ordering system and ships from the
same stock as other HP sales offices, and shipment time from order
placement date is the same. Customers may receive an order faster
because no confirming P.O. is required for most orders under $10,000
(subject to credit approval), HP DIRECT is committed to entering an
order on the same day as it is received, and orders can be placed with a
credit card so that potential credit delays may be avoided. HP DIRECT is
investigating the possibility of a fast-ship capability.
What types of services are not available from HP DIRECT?
Since HP DIRECT is chartered to provide the CSO field sales organization
with a streamlined, efficient source for information and ordering, there
are some services that HP DIRECT does not offer: systems order
processing, unless special arrangements have been made; presales support
or ordering for SF 12 products, except selected PL6R supplies; postsales
technical support for all products; network consulting; Professional
Services Organization consulting; order processing that requires GSA,
demo development, or some educational discounts; and lease orders with
values over $20,000.
Sales Rep Benefits
Why should sales reps refer customers to HP DIRECT?
Sales reps receive full quota and commission and gain time to focus on
strategic sales opportunities when customers order from HP DIRECT. HP
DIRECT will notify sales reps when a customer can be best served by a
rep and will take responsibility for resolving issues related to HP
DIRECT orders.
How should sales reps position HP DIRECT with customers?
Sales reps should tell customers that HP DIRECT is an additional service
developed for customer convenience; is available even when sales reps
are not; can answer presales technical questions; is a quick, easy way
for customers to place orders; and offers a product information catalog.
How can sales reps most effectively use HP DIRECT?
Sales reps should make sure that customers have the HP DIRECT catalog.
Reps should also give customers the HP DIRECT phone number, 800-637-
7740, when returning calls and leave the HP DIRECT number in their voice
mail greeting.
Quota Credit and Order Visibility
Do sales reps receive quota for orders their customers place at HP
DIRECT?
Sales reps get full quota and commission for HP DIRECT orders. Quota for
HP DIRECT orders is assigned via the open splits process. Area splits
coordinators use their account listings to credit appropriate reps.
How do sales reps know when one of their customers has placed an order
at HP DIRECT?
Whenever an HP DIRECT order totaling at least $5,000 is placed, HP
DIRECT notifies the appropriate district manager via voice mail. HP
DIRECT order numbers can be identified by the 3138 order prefix on SASY
400 and Sales Rep Order and Commission Detail reports. Sales reps who
should have received credit for HP DIRECT orders but did not should
contact HP DIRECT/5050/05 or call the HP DIRECT Field Question and
Comment Line at 408 or Telnet 345-8678. HP DIRECT will work with reps
and local splits coordinators to resolve these issues.
Named Accounts
Does HP DIRECT offer special services for named accounts?
HP DIRECT has a program to tailor its services to meet the needs of
specific named accounts. Benefits to customers include a customized 800
number and catalog, and assigned HP DIRECT order management and
technical reps. For more information about the HP DIRECT Named Account
Program contact Kelly Owensby at 704 or Telnet 559-7404 or Naomi Miller
at 408 or Telnet 345-8344.
HP Channel Partners
Can Channel Partners order from HP DIRECT?
Yes, Channel Partners can use the convenient order management services.
With the exception of demo development discounts all contract discount
terms apply.

New CA-Unicenter Products and Programs for HP 9000 and HP
Apollo 9000
New CA-Unicenter Products and Programs for HP 9000 and HP Apollo
9000
Contact: Nancy Twombly, 408 or Telnet 447-4302
Computer Associates (CA) has announced new CA-Unicenter products and
programs for HP 9000 Series 800 business servers and HP Apollo 9000
Series 700 workstations.
Availability on Series 800
CA-Unicenter/325 is now available and shipping in quantity on Series 800
business servers. HP is currently the only UNIX-system-based vendor that
can claim this support. Support for other vendors may occur in late
1993.
Integration with HP OpenView OperationsCenter
CA has announced plans to integrate CA-Unicenter capabilities with HP
OpenView OperationsCenter to expand the solutions portfolio for HP
OpenView users with integrated solutions covering the major disciplines
of systems management. With this integration potential security breaches
detected by CA-Unicenter will be reflected on the HP OpenView map and
incorporated into the automated problem resolution process initiated by
HP OpenView OperationsCenter.
At shipment release of HP OpenView OperationsCenter in August, CA will
have integrated CA-Unicenter with HP OpenView OperationsCenter's Message
Browser, Application Desktop, and Problem Resolution Process. This will
reinforce HP's position as an industry-leading supplier of system and
network management software for open systems.
Availability on Series 700
CA has announced CA-Unicenter/125, the first integrated system
management solution for the Series 700 workstation family. CA-
Unicenter/125 will provide a unique, cost-effective solution for
distributed systems management in complex client/server environments. It
will enhance security, improve file management procedures, and automate
workstation activities. When working in conjunction with CA-
Unicenter/325, CA-Unicenter/125 can offer complete enterprisewide
integrated system management.
CA-Unicenter/125 will provide advanced security features previously
unavailable in networks of workstations. It will empower workstation
users to control access to their workstations and files and enable the
organization to implement networkwide security policies to protect
enterprise assets. Using policy-based rules the system will lower the
administrative burden of industrial-strength security. Scheduled
availability for CA-Unicenter/125 is first quarter 1994.
License Program
Beginning July 1 in the Americas and Asia Pacific, and July 15 in
Europe, HP will begin a one-year promotion to provide a 120-day, no-cost
license for CA-Unicenter with all Series 800 midrange and high-end
systems.
All Class G, H, and I shipments will contain the CA-Unicenter product on
DAT tape. To receive a 120-day, no-cost license to run the CA-Unicenter
software, customers must fill out a registration form and send it to CA.
To continue using the software at the end of the trial period, customers
must license the software directly from CA. Shipments of this
promotional kit to Model 890 (uniprocessor) customers will begin in
September when multiprocessing support is available for CA-Unicenter.
Class F customers will receive a promotional CA-Unicenter demo disk that
highlights CA-Unicenter features. These customers are eligible to
contact CA to receive CA-Unicenter and the 120-day, no-cost license, but
they should have adequate disk (1 GB) and memory (32 MB) to successfully
run the software.

Access GSY Hotline subjects CAINFO for general information on CA
products and availability, SMPOSN regarding positioning for CA-Unicenter
and HP OpenView OperationsCenter, CATRIAL for information on the 120-
day, no-cost license program, and CAOVER for a slide-set overview of the

New HP Windows Client Model 425SX
New HP Windows Client Model 425SX
Contact: SRC Cupertino
o Product Name and P/N: HP Windows Client Model 425SX, see text for
P/Ns
o Description: LAN-attached, intelligent client that combines the
power of a 486 PC with the system control of a terminal at a price that
is up to 40 percent lower than comparably configured PCs
o Target Market: customers that want to move up from terminals when
installing new systems or system upgrades, want to upgrade installed-
base terminals, or want a low-cost alternative to networked PCs for new
systems or for upgrading older PCs (requires careful qualification)
o Public Introduction: July 19
HP Windows Client is an MS-DOS(R)/Microsoft(R) Windows client solution
that provides 486 power, bundled terminal-emulation software, access to
PC productivity and client/server applications, and the central
administration benefits of terminals. HP Windows Client does not have a
floppy drive or a disk drive.
HP Windows Client is available through SF 40 with full quota credit and
commission. By replacing terminals or third-party PCs with HP Windows
Client, you can expect to double the value of a system sale. VARs will
normally receive better margin on HP Windows Client than on traditional
PCs and will get full contract leverage and Impact program credit.
Features and Benefits
o Designed to perform-HP Windows Client includes a 25-MHz 486SX
microprocessor, 4-MB RAM (expandable to 36 MB), integrated ultra VGA
local bus video and bus-mastering LAN interfaces, all of which are
integrated in a single board design.
o MS-DOS 6.0 and Windows 3.1-Users have access to thousands of the most
common software titles and currently the largest set of supported
applications, with integration features and rapid context switching.
o Bundled terminal emulation-Walker, Richer & Quinn (WRQ) Reflection 1
for Windows provides HP 700/9X block-mode functionality, and WRQ
Reflection 2 for Windows provides access to HP 9000 or other servers
requiring ANSI terminal emulation. WRQ Reflection Network Series (RNS)
provides access to HP 3000, HP 9000, and other host systems across the
network. Additional emulators, including 3270 and X emulators, are
available from WRQ and other software providers.
o Multiple hosts access-Connecting to the host through HP Windows
Client's integrated LAN interface allows multiple concurrent connections
to several different, and even different types of, host systems.
o Choice of monitors-HP Windows Client offers a choice of high-quality
monitors ranging from entry-level monochrome to high-resolution color
with superior image quality and ergonomic enhancements.
o Low-cost, reliable design-The hardware design reduces part count by
eliminating components found in traditional PC designs, such as fans,
disk drives, and I/O slots. Purchased separately, the bundled software
could cost up to $1,000. The low-cost hardware design, combined with
bundled software, delivers a solution cost lower than that of comparably
configured PCs.
o Complete, integrated solution-HP Windows Client has been fully tested
for compatibility, functionality, and performance. It eliminates the
potential problem of configuring hardware and software components that
could have incompatibility or version problems.
o Simplified system management-PC software management is simplified as
it is installed centrally on the server. Software installation and
updating is fast and simple, version control is more effective, and
license administration is simplified. Systemwide disk storage
requirements are reduced by eliminating redundant copies of the
operating system and application software. Incompatibilities and support
problems are minimized as a result of the consistent hardware
environment.
o High data security and integrity-Elimination of disk drives on the
desktop allows for centralized application and data backup and avoids a
source of virus introduction. High-availability approaches to data
storage can be implemented in mission-critical environments. Data
integrity is enhanced, and the time and effort involved in backing up
data is reduced. Security is improved as network access to software and
files can be tightly controlled through passwords and permissions.
Sensitive data is protected from unauthorized removal because it is
stored on server disks and cannot be downloaded to floppy disks.
o Efficient disk utilization-Less PC disk buffer space for future
application upgrades is needed, which reduces wasted disk space.
Strategies for data aging, archiving, and compression can be employed
for better use of disk space.
Product Positioning
o Versus PCs-HP Windows Client is the preferred client for customers
that need terminal access and make casual-to-moderate use of PC
applications.
o Versus X terminals-HP Windows Client is a better solution when high
performance of MS-DOS/Windows applications is required with casual
access to text-oriented commercial X applications. An X-emulator is
required on HP Windows Client in this environment.
Tips and Traps
Be sure apples-to-apples price comparisons are made with the competition
that reflect the value of the integrated interfaces and software bundled
with HP Windows Client. Recommend only a small number of clients with HP
9000 portable NetWare. Token Ring is not currently available. OS/2 and
HP LanServer are not currently supported. Discounts are higher than for
HP Vectra PCs but lower than for other Computer Systems Organization
clients.
Configuration Information
o LAN-802.3/Ethernet
o Supported servers-HP 9000 Series 800 server with Portable NetWare
3.11 Version A.11.02 or later, HP 3000 server with MPE/iX and Portable
NetWare 3.01B or later, and PC server with NetWare 3.11 or later are
supported. PC server with HP LAN Manager 2.1 or later will be supported
October 1993. HP 9000 server with HP LAN Manager/X 1.3 or later is
supported only as a file server; LAN Manager PC server is required as a
startup or startup/file device.
o HP Windows Client/Server kit-This provides HP, Microsoft, and WRQ
software on 31/2- and 51/4-inch media, documentation, and licenses,
which are needed to set up a server for the HP Windows Client
environment. The software is installed onto the server through a
networked PC with a Nefloppy drive.

HP MPE V DAT Tape Support
HP MPE V DAT Tape Support
Contact: Harry Uy, 916 or Telnet 785-4314
The HP MPE V operating system supports the DDS HP6400 1300 1.3-GB HP-IB
DAT drive, P/N C1511A, as a tape device for use in coldloads (COLDSTART,
RELOAD), STORE/RESTORE, and SYSDUMPs starting with a patched version of
V-delta-8 and later versions. For more information refer to Commercial
Systems Newsletter issue 238.
HP does not intend to distribute FOS and SUBSYS or updates on DAT media
for HP MPE V-based systems. The DAT drive is supported for some
operations but not as distribution media. This is a result of the
limited use of these media by HP MPE V customers and the high cost
associated with the setup of other distribution media.
The primary reason for the DAT support on HP MPE V was to allow the
migration of files to HP MPE/iX systems that shipped with only the DAT
drive as the system tape drive. The secondary reason was to allow
customers to perform their own backup for STORE/RESTORE, SYSDUMP, and
COLDLOAD from a SYSDUMP. The DAT can be used also for customers with
central site contracts who might have chosen to use DAT tapes to
distribute to their own internal remote systems.
Customers whose sole tape drive is a DDS device must purchase a CD-ROM
reader, a cartridge drive, or a 1/2-inch reel tape drive to install
updates from HP. These products are available through Finance and
Remarketing Division or third parties.

New HP 32-Port Multiplexer
New HP 32-Port Multiplexer
Contact: local network SRC
o Product Name and P/N: HP 32-Channel Multiplexer, J2096A
o Description: HP-PB 32-channel RS-232 asynchronous multiplexer for HP
9000 Series 800
o Target Market: environments that need direct connect ports running
HP-UX 9.0 and later
Features and Benefits
The product offers a larger port capacity per I/O slot with the same
high performance of current multiplexer products. It is a single-high
card and includes two 16-port, industry standard RJ-45 female connectors
that can be rackmounted in a standard 19-inch cabinet. Optional DB-25
connectivity is available in a 19-inch direct distribution panel.
Customers can now double the number of ports in a system at a price that
is about 20 percent lower per port than that of current multiplexers.
Product Positioning
The 32-port mux offers a price/performance solution to meet terminal I/O
needs.
Competitive Positioning
The product is competitive against the IBM RS-6000 solution.
Tips and Traps
The product is not available in RS-423 or modem connect. If this is
required use the 16-port products, P/Ns J2093A and J2094A. A factory
integrated version, P/N J2096AZ, will be available in July.

HP DTC products introduced in February have been enhanced to offer
integration features for customers that prefer a fully integrated
solution including DTCs. The DTCs can be ordered with HP 1.1- and 1.6-m
factory-integrated cabinets. Customers can choose among HP DTC 16TN,
P/N J2060AZ; DTC 72MX, P/N J2070AZ; and Telnet DTC 64-port bundle, P/N
A2957AZ. The 64-port bundle consists of four HP DTC 16TN products priced
lower than four single DTC 16TN products. This provides price-sensitive
customers with a large port-count solution at a competitive price point.
Lead with the DTC solution if the customer environment includes remote
installations or requires access to multiple HP or non-HP systems using
Telnet. When I/O slots are limited the DTC can meet terminal I/O needs.
Tips and Traps
All integrated DTCs will ship in July except for HP DTC 16TN, which will
be available in fourth quarter 1993. The standalone DTCs are currently
available for shipment.

drawings-one each for U.S. and Canadian sales reps and CEs. By selling
at least five UPS products, a sales rep and a CE can each win a
Caribbean cruise for two, including roundtrip air fare. The program is
effective June 1-October 31 for qualifying UPS products sold during this
period.
Sales reps who sell a minimum of five qualifying UPS products win a
portable CD player and one chance for the grand prize. For every
additional five units sold sales reps win an additional chance for the
grand prize drawing. CEs can qualify for the same program by submitting
proof of UPS recommendations for quotations totaling five units or more.
CPS is sending qualification forms to CEs, which must be filled out and
sent to CPS for CEs to qualify for the CD players and the second grand
prize drawing.
CPS will track sales for each rep and mail out the CD players as reps
win them. CPS will administer the grand prize drawing in early November
and announce the winners.

Domain '93 Program
Domain '93 Program
Contact: Todd Brue, 303 or Telnet 229-4422
Software Technology Division supports Domain users by providing current
product engineering (CPE) and customer-driven enhancements to help
extend current system investments. New updates for Domain SR10.4 have
been developed and are a part of the Domain '93 program. The update will
be available July 1.
Features and Benefits
o X11R5 support-Run-time environment allows the execution of X11R5-
compliant applications. (The X11R5 server is backward compatible with
previous versions of X Windows applications.) The major components of
X11R5 are an X server, a font server and fonts, a set of shared and
archived libraries, various standard clients, and header files. The
major differences between X11R5 and the current X11R4 are a new, more
general mechanism for storing and accessing fonts, internationalization
hooks, the ability to use new color spaces, and defect fixes and
performance enhancements.
o OSF/Motif 1.2 shared libraries-required to run Motif 1.2-compliant
applications within an X11R5 environment
o hpterm 1.3-X11R4-compliant application for running an HP 2392A
terminal emulation window that is useful for accessing HP 3000
applications such as HP SupportLine
o User environment development kit (UEDK) 2.0-enables creation of
applications that are X11R5- or Motif 1.2-compliant and includes X11R5
archive libraries, X11R5 header files, and the Motif 1.2 development
environment
o Configuring your Domain node for X terminal-like operation
application note-gives an overview of how to configure a Domain node as
an X terminal; is beneficial when using a high-performance HP Apollo
9000 Series 700 server in conjunction with Domain nodes. With such a
configuration, for example, the performance of a DN3000 can be increased
to approximate that of a standalone entry-level HP Apollo 9000 Series
400.
Ordering Information
The new functionality is being packaged into two products that will be
available as specials effective July 1.
X11R5 on Domain includes X11R5, Motif 1.2, and hpterm 1.3 run-time
software. Customers that maintain HP support contracts for Domain will
be sent a packet describing how to obtain a copy of X11R5 on Domain at
no charge. U.S. customers without HP support contracts for Domain need
to purchase X11R5 on Domain for $750 (U.S. local currency price) by
calling 800-237-3990. European customers can fax order requests to 33-
76-62-25-15. Asia Pacific customers can contact local sales reps.

New HP OpenMail Client Functionality
New HP OpenMail Client Functionality
Contact: Zoe Evans, 44-344-763641 or Telnet 315-3641
o Product Name and P/N: HP OpenMail for HP 9000 HP-UX systems, P/Ns
B2284/5/6A, B2280A, B2290AZ
o Description: new client functionality that will be available with HP
OpenMail, including cc:Mail and Microsoft Mail drivers, HP GUI for Apple
Macintosh, HP GUI for Sun Microsystems, and HP PhoneBook
o Target Market: major accounts that are committed to standards and
open systems, have strong corporate communication needs, regard
information as a mission-critical resource, value cost of ownership
rather than cost of purchase, and need scalable solutions
o Public Announcement: June 15 EMA conference in Atlanta, Georgia
Features and Benefits
The cc:Mail and Microsoft Mail drivers allow Microsoft Windows cc:Mail
and Microsoft Mail users to connect directly to HP OpenMail. Users can
then share the HP OpenMail directory, message store, and transport
facilities. This eliminates the need for a Microsoft Mail Post Office
server or a cc:Mail Post Office server and the need for a gateway.
HP OpenMail will support a GUI for Macintosh and Sun Solaris
workstations that has a similar look and feel to the Windows and Motif
GUIs. This extends HP OpenMail's client interfaces across most desktops
in an enterprise: terminals, MS-DOS, Windows, HP NewWave, Macintosh,
and Motif.
The HP PhoneBook application provides access to the HP OpenMail
directory with a telephone book paradigm. Windows, Macintosh, and Motif
users can search and display the HP OpenMail directory attributes
through flexible queries and a user-friendly display. The application is
designed to be used in conjunction with the HP Windows, Macintosh, and
Motif GUIs for HP OpenMail.
With HP OpenMail Clients of Choice, customers can use a single server
for multiple client types, including leading third-party clients, and
administration and management is centralized and reduced. The
application allows access to a single corporate directory, and it
eliminates the need for a gateway, the need for PC-server Post Offices,
and the problem of directory synchronization.

AXIOM/mx on HP UNIX System Servers
AXIOM/mx on HP UNIX System Servers
Contact: Ted Luchsinger, 203 or Telnet 325-5624; Janna Hoiberg at AXIS,
508-481-9600
o Product Name: AXIOM/mx from AXIS
o Description: MRPII software solution that provides all standard
MRPII modules and increased functionality in the areas of material
dispatching, built-in quantity tolerance controls, group technology
scheduling, and standard costing
o Target Industry: manufacturing
o Target Market: mixed-mode manufacturers (nonassembly)-where there is
a combination of discrete and process elements in the product workflow-
such as manufacturers of fabricators, steel springs, extrusions,
fasteners, and wire and cable; suppliers to subassembly manufacturers
for aerospace, automotive, and electronics
Features and Benefits
Group technology scheduling allows for manufacturing scheduling by
product families. This minimizes set-up changes, maximizes throughput,
shortens lead times, and improves delivery.
User-defined quantity and tolerance limits (decimal precision; units in
feet, square feet, pounds, gallons, meters, liters, and so forth)
improve the accuracy of data used for planning and control.
User-established product and process definition provides a system
designed to meet customer needs, which allows for fast adjustments to
marketplace needs.
Strategic Fit
The product fills a gap in HP strategy by targeting a marketplace no one
else currently addresses. AXIS has been selling the product on DEC VAX
and Prime. The current move to HP-UX makes the benefits of their
customized solutions available to HP prospects, from mainframe to
distributed sites. HP-supplied leads will be quoted only on HP
platforms.
Product Positioning
AXIOM/mx is a complete MRPII solution set. Because this product is
targeted specifically to mixed-mode manufacturers, all other solutions
to this prospect class are a force fit.
Competitive Positioning
AXIOM/mx has won against ASK, JIT, and other process and discrete
packages. Current competitors include Symix, MAPICS, ASK, and SPECTRUM
Associates.
Tips and Traps
Bring AXIS in first and lock in the platform for your mixed-mode
prospects.
